Tell us about your company…
Karma Event Lighting focuses on the creative & theatrical side of special events lighting & AV. We love transforming venues & events by immersing people in color, light and texture. We want that Wow when people walk in the door!
How did you get started in the wedding business?
My husband and partner, Jeremy. He is a DJ for Ray The DJ company. We saw the need for awesome and affordable lighting. We started with uplighting, now we do cool stuff like color changes, pattern and texture washes (you have to see photos to really understand the awesomeness), spot lighting, and elevated dance floor lighting. It’s ridiculous how lighting can transform a room and an event!
What makes you different from other businesses in the field?
Me! Oh and details, details, details. Have you ever been to an event where you see cables and extension cords just lying on the ground? It’s so messy and makes me bananas. I like to be the man behind the curtain. You see all the cool effects, but not the secret of how we did it.
Why do you like working with weddings?
I love being part of a celebration. A wedding is a momentous occasion with a ton of emotion, and people are there to have a good time. I love fulfilling my bride’s vision. It gives me chills and happy tears every time. I don’t think there’s one Grand Entrance and First Dance where I haven’t been teary eyed.
What was the most difficult situation you have faced with a client and how did you resolve it?
Unreasonable expectations with a small budget is tricky. For this bride, we’ll give her a little bit of everything so the vision is executed within her budget.
From a vendor’s perspective, what’s the best piece of advice you can give to engaged couples?
I have 2: #1 – Know your venue and #2 – Hire a consultant if you can. Go to your venue both during the day and at night. This way you can see what it will look like when your guests arrive and during your reception as well.
Hire a consultant. There are a lot of moving parts to any event. A consultant is peace of mind during the planning process but more importantly, the night of the wedding or event. If you have somebody you can rely on, you can actually enjoy the party you’ve worked so hard to create.
What or who motivates you?
My husband and partner, Jeremy. He’s so creative and his wheels are in constant motion. It’s hard to keep up with him when he’s on a roll. Sometimes I’m just along for the ride. But the ride is always AMAZING!
What do you do when you are not working?
Hang out with friends and family… and killing time until football season starts J
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I’m trying to improve my cooking skills. We’ve been really healthy lately. So whenever I hit Sprouts for groceries I buy a vegetable that I’ve never cooked before. It usually works out well, sometimes not so much. Live and learn! 🙂
