Tell us about your company, Ushna Khan Photography…
Ushna Khan Photography has been in business since 2012, with a focus on bridal fashion and weddings. We shoot events of all sizes, but limit ourselves to 15 weddings a year in order to provide a more curated, hands on experience. From shooting, editing, to image delivery, everything is handled in house. We have also been published in magazines and blogs, the likes of Martha Stewart, South Asian Bride Magazine, and Magnolia Rouge to name a few.
How did you get started in the wedding business?
I’ve always documented my family growing up with whatever camera we had on hand, but it wasn’t until I was in college studying business, that my friends started asking me to take photos for them. From there, word of mouth led to work. The next thing you know I’m starting a career in photography.
What makes your different from other businesses in the field?
This is definitely a hard one to explain, as I’m not great with words. Visually I can say my work is painterly, nostalgic, and inspired by fashion editorials. I always challenge myself and exploring new ways of photography and reviving the old. Apart from digital, I shoot on vintage film cameras which definitely creates a unique look in my photos. I also enjoy styling my clients when it comes to their portrait sessions since I find it very important to have a cohesive story line.
Why do you like working with weddings?
I love that in one weekend or day, I can experience a full range of concepts to photograph. I like the thrill of it all, the rawness, something new every time. Almost always, learning something new, or meeting some amazing souls in the process!
What was the most difficult situation you have faced with a client and how did you resolve it?
Thankfully, I haven’t had any major issues (knock on wood), but I would say I’m good at handling stressful weddings where everything is going wrong; weather, time, family dynamics etc. Keeping the couple calm, managing crowds, reassessing the timeline and must-have shots, and getting the job done.
From a vendor’s perspective, what’s the best piece of advice you can give to engaged couples?
Plan for your photos to be done prior to all your festivities beginning, so you can truly enjoy each event carelessly. Simply follow your heart, and do everything the way you like, and cancel out anything that makes your wedding stressful, sleepless, less enjoyable.
What or who motivates you?
My work is my passion which is motivation enough. I do love the reaction I get from my clients, friends, or family when I take photos for them. Making them feel and look good…is definitely rewarding.
What do you do when you are not working?
Exploring new cities, spending time with family/friends, checking out coffee shops and chasing art. Is it a surprise that I also like taking photos when i’m not working?
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I was born in New Jersey, but also lived in Lahore, Pakistan for 10 years of my life. I speak Urdu/ Hindi and Punjabi. I’ve traveled to about 20 countries and counting!
